The battle to nominate Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court has picked up a couple of unlikely allies, two democrats.
Yes, you read that right. Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet (Dem) had quite a bit of praise for the Supreme Court nominee. The senator had many great things to say about Gorsuch’s “distinguished record of public service, private practice, and outstanding integrity and intellect,” and pointed out that even the Colorado bar had a fair amount of respect for him.
“Out of respect for both Judge Garland and Judge Garland’s service, integrity, and commitment to the rule of law, I suggest we fulfill our responsibility to this nominee and to the country by considering his nomination in the manner his predecessor deserved but was denied,” Sen. Bennet said.
He’s not alone, either. Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin has voiced that he’ll support a hearing and vote for Gorsuch, as well as Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal. Both men are members of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary.
Former acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal has had great things to say about him as well. According to The Daily Caller:
“Judge Gorsuch and I come from different sides of the political spectrum,” [Katyal] said. “We disagree about many things. But we agree on the important things — that all people are equal before the law and that a judge’s duty is to uphold the law and uphold these principles and the Constitution above all.”
“The judge has done that during his time on the bench and I know he will continue to do so as a justice on the Supreme Court,” he added.”
A man who appeals to both sides is a man that sounds like a good choice, indeed!
